ARLINGTON - There has been no contract extension offer made to Rangers GM Jon Daniels and there won't be until after the Rangers' season is complete. That said, Nolan Ryan sounded like a president with a GM in place for the long-term.
When asked by a New York reporter about the importance of keeping Daniels, whose contract includes an "out" clause for this year, Ryan offered Daniels lots of credit for putting together the team on the field and the management team off it.
The unstated thrust of the question, however, is whether Ryan was concerned that Daniels, a native of Queens, might end up running the New York Mets before the winter is out.
"We feel pretty comfortable that this is his organization, that these are his people and this is his time," Ryan said. "I'd be shocked if he doesn't stay with us."
In my conversations with Rangers officials, the general sentiment has been that a lucrative extension offer is forthcoming for both Daniels and manager Ron Washington, but that nobody wants to spend time right now on anything other than pushing this Rangers team as deep as possible into the playoffs.
