Basic injury prevention

There are a number of issues you may not be aware of that will affect your safety.
If you have long hair, it should be tied back, put in a hairnet or cap to keep it away from rotating machinery. Loose clothing or jewelry could also get caught in machinery, so remove anything that could get caught and wear coveralls or an approved work uniform.
Depending on the equipment you’re using, you may need to wear protective gloves, footwear, “eye” or ear protection, full-face protection or even a hard-hat. And wear a respirator to protect your lungs while working with caustic materials or gases.
Prevent back injuries when lifting heavy objects. Crouch with your legs slightly apart, stand close to the object and position yourself so that the center of gravity is between your feet. Keep your back straight, and use your legs to lift the object.

Property security

Take care of your tools. Whether they are your own or belong to your employer they should be clean, in good condition and safely stored when not in use.
Check your customer’s vehicle before you start to work on it. If there are any valuables in it, or any damage to the paintwork, note them on your job sheet; refer them to the customer or to your supervisor. Always use seat covers, floor mats and fender covers when working on a vehicle. Clean any oil and grease off the vehicle when you have completed the job.
Find out what procedures your employer has in place regarding the accounting for spare parts and consumables like oils and sealants. If a vehicle has been damaged in the course of its repair or there is any loss of tools and equipment, notify your supervisor.
Lock doors and windows when you leave the workshop, and always be aware of any unauthorized people in the workshop and report them to your supervisor
