Part 1. Preparation and safety
Objective
  • Install the valve train.

Personal safety
Whenever you perform a task in the workshop you must use personal protective clothing and equipment that is appropriate for the task and which conforms to your local safety regulations and policies. Among other items, this may include:
  • Work clothing - such as coveralls and steel-capped footwear
  • Eye protection - such as safety glasses and face masks
  • Ear protection - such as earmuffs and earplugs
  • Hand protection - such as rubber gloves and barrier cream
  • Respiratory equipment - such as face masks and valved respirators
If you are not certain what is appropriate or required, ask your supervisor.
Safety check
  • Make sure that you understand and observe all legislative and personal safety procedures when carrying out the following tasks. If you are unsure of what these are, ask your supervisor.
Points to note
  • Lubricate all components prior to assembly.

Part 2: Step-by-step instruction
  1. Install pushrod guide plate
If the engine has rocker studs or push rod guide plates, put them on now.
  2. Install valve train lifters
Then put your valve train organizer tray near the engine. In almost every rebuild the camshaft is replaced and so are the lifters. If so, the new lifters can go in any order into the block.
The bottoms of the lifters that ride on the camshaft should have the same type of lubrication as the cam lobes. The sides just need oil or assembly lube and the lifters can slide in.
If you are reusing lifters from the organizer tray, they have to match back to the exact same cam lobes or they'll wear out much quicker once the engine is running again.
  3. Install pushrods and rocker arms
The same goes for the push rods. The same end has to be facing up to keep them from having problems later on. Before the rocker arms go back on, lubricate the cups of the lifter plungers where the push rods sit, and lube the tips of the push rods and the tips of the valves, so that when the rocker arms come out of the tray there will be no bare metal rubbing on metal. Lubricate the rocker pivot balls too, before you put them in. Tighten the rocker nuts only finger tight for now.
